So I Bit the Bullet...

Look what's coming to my house this week!  I finally decided to use my bajillion Birchbox points to finally buy my very own Clarisonic Mia last week when Birchbox sent me a percent-off code.  (If you guys aren't Birchbox members, I'd highly recommend checking it out.  I'm sort of hit and miss on the individual boxes, but almost all of my favorite skincare products of late have started out as Birchbox samples.  Mostly, honestly, it's just really fun to get a surprise box of beauty products in my mailbox every month.  If you decide to sign up, you can use my referral link so that I can get extra points, too.  Hooray!)

So anyway, I'm checking my UPS tracking code obsessively waiting for my Mia to come.  I got the turquoise version -- too gorgeous -- and I picked up a full-size of the Origins Checks and Balances frothy face wash (another favorite found through Birchbox!) this weekend to use with it.  I'm going to do a review on the actual product as I use it, maybe with weekly updates.  Here's hoping it helps combat some of the stupid breakouts I've been suffering lately.  Adult acne is just the cruelest thing, isn't it?

Friday Fic Fave: "Driving Lessons"

Driving Lessons by MrsTater

Today's Friday Fic Fave is an oldie but a goodie -- a Sybil/Branson fic that was completed over the summer, before season two began airing.  The premise is fairly simple: Branson teaches Sybil how to drive.  It's a great device to get the two of them close to each other, and it forces the two of them to own up to their feelings and face the potential consequences that acting on those feelings may create.

My favorite scene in this fic takes place toward the end of the story, when Branson takes Sybil to dance at a wedding reception.  We get a great glimpse of Gwen after she leaves Downton, and we get to see the way that Sybil might fit in to a world very different from the one in which she was raised.  You may have read this story already, but if you haven't, I'd suggest giving it a try!

Sneak Peek: "both alike in dignity" #20

graphic by d-franco
As promised -- a sneak peek of the next chapter of "both alike in dignity."  Hope you enjoy it -- I'd love to hear what you think!

***
Grief, Tom discovers, is an utterly exhausting thing.  They leave the hospital as soon as the doctor is certain that Sybil isn’t at risk for infection, and when they settle in to Grantham House, he suddenly finds himself completely exhausted and completely unable to sleep.

For the first few days, Sybil barely gets out of the big, soft bed they’re sleeping in at her grandmother’s house.  Their room is on the first floor, and getting her up the steep stairs two days after she’d delivered a baby is more than a bit challenging.  Once ensconced in the spacious bedroom – the same one she used to sleep in as a child when she visited her grandparents in London, she explains – she doesn’t much want to leave.  She sleeps most of the time; sometimes she reads a bit or watches a little telly, but for the most part, she chooses simply to shut out the world by closing her eyes.

He envies her – well, he doesn’t really envy her, of course, but he wishes he could sleep the time away like she’s able to do.  When he does fall asleep, out of sheer fatigue, he wakes suddenly amid horrible dreams – she keeps dying too, in his mind, and he rubs his eyes and watches the gentle rise and fall of her chest to prove to himself that she’s still there.  She has the benefit of the medication prescribed at the hospital, which makes her groggy and even a little confused when she’s able to stay awake.  Most of the time, though, she can’t.  He sits next to her in the bed while she sleeps, surfing through the channels on the television without really seeing them.  He does realise just how many adverts feature children, families with lots of precocious kids, babies crawling about with toys and pets and mothers.  He’s never noticed before, but he notices now.  He’s glad she’s sleeping.

When it comes to talking about what’s happened, though, he finds that grief is not only exhausting but also mute – neither of them really say anything.  They talk a little about what’s happening to her body now – where she’s feeling pain, how he can help, whether or not the bleeding is something that should concern them – but not about what happened then.  Then is over, it seems.  Maybe they’ll talk about it eventually, but to what end?  They can’t go back.  It doesn’t seem like she wants to.  He’s sorting through some of the paperwork from the hospital one afternoon, and he finds a pamphlet about long-term birth control solutions, implants and hormones and things he doesn’t really understand.  He can’t blame her.  He won’t blame her if she never, ever wants to be pregnant again.

One afternoon they’re lying in bed, watching one of his old box sets of The West Wing, when she looks up at him and scoots closer, touching his face with her fingertips.  He can feel the catch of her skin against coarse hair – he’s not shaved since before she went into hospital, and his beard is starting to take over.  But she doesn’t seem to mind.  She shifts her weight, and then her lips are soft on his, and they’re kissing, unhurriedly, languidly, the kind of kisses that are simply kisses themselves, not a prelude to something else.

He reaches up and brushes his fingers against her wild, curly hair, and she sighs against his mouth, and they hold each other tightly.  He still doesn’t sleep.

Friday Fic Fave: "Lost Time"

Lost Time by ARCurren

One of my all-time favorite fics, "Lost Time" is a brilliant take on the moments we've missed from Sybil and Branson's relationship since it began in season one.  Recent chapters have covered Sybil's reaction to Tom's unexpected hip touch, Tom's first brush with journalism, and Sybil's twenty-first birthday.  The story does a wonderful job of fleshing out a relationship that was largely left to our imaginations on the show; we see how these two talk, fight, and fall in love, all within the parameters of the show's established canon.

The war is coming to an end in "Lost Time," and you know what that means -- we're heading soon to Sybil and Branson's attempted elopement and their eventual announcement of their relationship.  And I cannot wait to see what happened off-screen!

Friday Fic Fave: "A Woman's Prerogative"

Time for a new blog feature -- most of you reading this probably know that I write fanfiction for Downton Abbey -- mostly stories about Sybil and Branson, some historical and one lengthy modern AU.  Here's a link to my profile at Fanfiction.net if you'd like to read them.

I'm fairly good at regular posting when I start a story, but I am straight-up terrible at remembering to review.  Hence, a new blog feature: the Friday Fic Fave, in which I highlight a story that I've read recently and loved.  If you have a story that you love and think I'd like, too, feel free to recommend it to me on Twitter! :-)

A Woman's Prerogative by ShirleyYouJest

This story is set immediately before and immediately after Sybil and Branson's failed elopement at the end of season two.  ShirleyYouJest's version of Downton would probably be a better fit for HBO than PBS (a claim that could easily be made about my stories, too!); she explores the growing affection and physical relationship between Tom and Sybil, considering the ways that the couple might be tempted to test boundaries before they're able to leave Downton and marry.  In part this is an exploration of Sybil's own realizations about sex and about her own body, as well as her growing feelings for Tom.  This certainly isn't a Sybil who just sees Tom as a "ticket" to get away from home; she loves him, and her growing desire for him is both a revelation and an obstacle for the two of them as they remain on the estate.

The sexy aspects of the story are hot and well written, but even better is the characterization of the two, especially of Sybil.  There's a conversation between Sybil and Cora in one of the recent chapters that's especially great -- it demonstrates just how tough it would be for Sybil to marry the chauffeur and have her family accept her actions.  The dialogue is great, the pacing is good so far, and I'm always excited when I see that a new chapter has been posted.  Highly recommended!
